Valentine Left Right Game Rules

The right left game is great for large groups but you can play with as few as 4 players. Fewer people means the gift doesn’t have the chance to pass very far.

You also need a game narrator to read the right-left story.

The narrator is typically the party host, but it can be whoever is a confident reader with a big voice, clear so everyone can hear the story.

Have all the players sit or stand in a circle. This can be with chairs or on the floor.

Depending on the size of your group and the space you have, this can be sitting on the floor or the floor, standing in a circle or sitting on chairs.

Hand the gift to a random player and have the game host start reading the Valentine story.

Each time the word LEFT is mentioned, anyone holding a gift must pass the gift to the left. If the word RIGHT is mentioned, the gift must be passed to the person on their right.

This gift passing continues until the end of the story. Anyone holding a gift or treat at the end gets to keep it!

I have put together an original story for your fun party game this Valentine’s Day:

Cupid’s Arrow

Cupid was getting ready for his busiest day of the year – Valentine’s Day. He had spent weeks crafting the RIGHT magic arrows that would make people fall head over heels in love with each other.

Little did Cupid know, the mischievous god of love Eros had LEFT a prank for him. He had swapped out some of Cupid’s perfect match arrows with some prank arrows that would have anyone who was struck by one falling for the first thing that they saw… even if that thing was not a person!

Cupid checked his clock. He was RIGHT on time to begin his annual Valentine’s matchmaking.

He checked his quiver and made sure he had enough arrows to last the whole day, not noticing that some of these arrows did not look quite RIGHT.

As he flew through the clouds, Cupid couldn’t help but feel excited. Valentine’s Day was always his favourite day of the year, and this year was no exception. He couldn’t wait to see all the happy couples that were LEFT with happy memories after today.

Cupid shot his first arrow RIGHT at the grumpy Mr Johnson as he was walking down the street. Up ahead was Miss Sunshine, the RIGHT person to bring some happiness into his life. But something was not quite RIGHT.

Mr Johnson instead found himself deeply infatuated with a tree and couldn’t stop hugging it. He eyes never LEFT the tree as Miss Sunshine strolled past, deeply confused.

Cupid tried again, this time aiming for a couple who were walking hand in hand. His arrow shot RIGHT towards them, but instead of feeling in love with each other, they both fell madly in love with a fire hydrant they were walking past and began to argue over who saw it first.

Cupid was baffled and embarrassed by these mistakes but he couldn’t let them ruin his mission.

As he continued spreading love, he instead LEFT the town in more chaos. To his RIGHT was a woman kissing her phone. To his LEFT, a young man was hugging his car. So far, only one of his arrows seemed to have worked RIGHT with one couple LEFT staring dreamily into each other’s eyes.

Cupid realized something was not RIGHT and quickly checked his arrows. That’s when he noticed the prank arrows that Eros had left for him.

Cupid was furious and immediately LEFT to confront Eros, who was laughing hysterically at his misfortune. After clearing up the misunderstanding, the two teamed up to make Valentine’s Day RIGHT again, undoing the chaos caused by the prank arrows.

They spread love and joy LEFT and RIGHT, to every corner of the town, making sure that everyone found their true loves and had a memorable Valentine’s Day experience.

As the sun set on Valentine’s Day, Cupid flew away with Eros, happy and content that they were able to make things RIGHT again. And from then on, whenever someone mentioned the town, they would always remember the incredible Valentine’s Day where love was spread LEFT and RIGHT.

The most basic version of this Valentine’s party game is played with a single gift or wrapped prize being passed around the circle and one winner.

If you have a large group of players, you can have multiple prizes. Hand them out around the circle fairly evenly spaced at the start of the game and the same rules apply, with several winners at the end.

This is recommended with large groups so that everyone has the chance to be passed a gift at least once during gameplay. It wouldn’t be much fun otherwise.

If you want everyone to win a prize, such as when playing with young children as a party game, like this birthday left-right game variation, you can use lollies or little prizes, such as these Valentine’s day gift ideas, to pass around instead.

Have one larger prize if you want, so one person still gets a bigger prize at the end (and it gets everyone excited for the big prize) or keep it even so each child gets the same.

To mix things up a tad more, you can yell out SWAP at random during the middle of the game and have each person switch seats with someone across from them. This helps to make sure the gift exchange game doesn’t end up with everyone holding their own gift at the end.

Or try a game of Left Right Across – the same but with an across prompt where you pass the gift across the circle instead.
